A beautiful specimen tree, the Chinese flowering chestnut (Xanthoceras sorbifolium) will put on a show to rival any flowering shrub and is best known for its bright green, pinnate leaves and red-centred, white flowers, which are carried on erect spikes to 20cm in length in late spring.
Not often seen for sale in the UK, it's also known as the shiny leaf yellowhorn on account of its glossy leaves, which stay on the tree well into the autumn without colouring up. Xanthoceras is perfect in woodland gardens where it will adapt to a wide range of growing conditions, including partial shade, damp soils or some drought.

Care Guide
Planting Advice for Xanthoceras yellowhorn:
- Before planting, soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
- Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you are planting and incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
- Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish more quickly.
- Place your shrub in the hole at the same level as the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the rootball, and water well. - Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel or bark.
- If you are planting into pots, use the best compost you can buy and add some sand or grit for drainage and ballast.
