Product Description

Forsythia intermedia 'Spectabilis' is one of the most spectacular of early season shrubs for its intensely yellow blooms that appear when little else in the garden is in flower.

From March to April, the bare branches become smothered in an abundance of fragrant, deep yellow, bell-shaped blooms before the mid-green, small oval leaves appear, producing dense foliage that then provides great structure and contrast in the garden through to late autumn, before the leaves fall for winter.

A truly reliable and low-maintenance variety, 'Spectabilis' makes a magnificent specimen when planted towards the middle or back of a border and is also a superb choice for spring-flowering hedging. Equally good in a large pot or container for your patio, this versatile shrub will thrive in sun or partial shade, in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

For best flowering results and to maintain size and shape, cut branches hard back to a pair of strong buds immediately after flowering. Hardy to -15°C, these hard-working deciduous shrubs are deliciously fragrant when in flower so will attract bees and other wildlife to your garden.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3-litre pot, ready to be potted on or planted out.

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Plant in full sun to get the maximum flowers from your shrub.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Forsythia:

  • Best in a sunny position protected from hard frost, which can damage fresh shoots.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to refill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots. Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish more quickly.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level as the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling)
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the rootball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel or bark.
  • If you are planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.

Aftercare Advice for your Forsythia:

  • Plants enjoy regular watering and don't like to dry out. It's especially important to keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot.
  • Feed twice a year – in spring and summer – while in full growth.
  • Mulch plants every winter – our straw mulch is ideal.

Pruning Advice for your Forsythia:

  • Prune after flowering in spring, to remove any misplaced or damaged branches.
  • After pruning, mulch with a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted compost or manure.
