Now this is a bit of fun, but is a real talking point too, and an interesting plant too.
This is a tough form of the Prickly Pear cactus, one that makes a lovely summer patio plant, but also with good drainage will tolerate a degree or two of frost. Besides having that exotic look growing on your Patio, it produces lovely yellow flowers, and then sets the fruit.
It does spread out more than grow up, so grow in a big pot with stones in for stability, and well-drained compost. It hates winter wet, so we advise protecting it in winter, although it is quite happy even in a shed or garage, as it does not grow in winter.
So, try something completely different that very few gardeners have grown in the UK...
Note - handle with care as they have some spines on. Bear this in mind when planting and keep away from small children or pets.
