Plant Information

Top Tips

  • For a natural look, throw a handful onto a grassy area and then plant them where they fall.
  • Which way up? Pointy end up usually, but don't worry, if in doubt, plant them on their side - they soon right themselves in the ground anyway.

Care Guide

Planting Fritillaria meleagris:

  • Grows well in most fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soils and prefers cool, rainy summers.
  • Handle the fragile bulbs carefully and plant at four times own depth.
  • Suitable for rock garden, raised bed or naturalising in grass where they form a stunning display.
  • Please check the bag for any additional planting instructions.
  • They are fine to plant even if a little green growth is showing, they'll just need a good watering when you plant them, and then only when the soil is dry.
  • Leave them in the ground once they die back and they'll come back bigger and better each year.
  • While all the energy that a bulb needs in order to grow is stored in the bulb itself, they will do better if you feed them when in active green growth.
  • Plant in herbaceous borders, in pots, or leave in the ground to naturalise.
  • If planted in pots be sure to water frequently and keep moist.

Aftercare Advice for Fritillaria meleagris:

  • Don't feed if naturalising in grass.
  • If growing in a pot, put a layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot to help keep the compost draining freely.
  • Add a handful of coarse sand or grit to the potting compost and then place the bulbs in a planting hole 3 times as deep as the height of the bulbs.
  • To protect the bulbs against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap over winter.
  • Water during dry periods.

Trimming your snake's head fritillary:

  • Only remove foliage and stems once they have browned.
  • if you want them to self-sow, you must leave the flowers to set seed and not mow until late August at the earliest when the stems have turned to straw and scattered their seeds.

Arrived on time and well packaged. 3 of the 72 trailing pansies a bit scraggy - but hoping they'll pick up as they were only small. planted them within 24 hrs and now hoping for a lovely winter display. Thank you.
