Product Description

A hybrid cactus of the Echinopsis family, Chamaelobivia is a clumping, hardy cactus that produces a profusion of large, bright red blooms in early summer.

Also known as the peanut cactus due to the appearance of its offsets, it’s a great indoor plant and will also overwinter outside in the UK with little more protection than a cold greenhouse.

Chamaelobivia is a tough, hardy 'garden' cactus that will sit happily in drier areas inside and out. Easy to care for and a real eye-catcher, if you don't have a garden you can grow this cactus perfectly well as an indoor houseplant.

Is it hardy? Yes definitely! Able to withstand temperatures down to -7°C, this is a really robust little houseplant that will tolerate most conditions that are thrown at it.

Thriving in pots of gritty compost in a cold greenhouse over winter, it's able to withstand low temperatures when kept on the dry side as it’s the wet rather than the cold that will promote the demise of this cactus - we've grown them successfully in pots outside in Lincolnshire!

This popular cactus has surprisingly large flowers which can grow up to 6 cm wide. To bloom in May, Chamaelobivia needs a cold period over winter after which you'll be rewarded with flowers in bright shades of red, pink, yellow, white or orange (depending on the type).

This cactus has an upright growth habit and produces multiple offsets which will bloom profusely. Flowers are up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter, brightly coloured, and tinged with iridescent highlights in the sun.

Place Chamaelobivia outside in your rock or gravel garden directly in the ground or in a pot on your balcony - it's so easy to grow that it’s even great for kids to get their first taste of gardening.

Supplied as a single plant in a 13cm pot, flower colour will vary, and we cannot guarantee the colour that you will receive.

Plant Information

Top Tips

The cactus is sensitive to winter wet which will cause rotting, so make sure that it stays dry over the winter to ensure it survives.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Chamaelobivia Cactus:

  • Pot on into terracotta pots in cactus mix for best results.
  • If planting outside, mix the garden soil with plenty of horticultural grit to provide good drainage.

Aftercare Advice for Chamaelobivia Peanut cactus:

  • Grow in full sun in the summer and water only when needed, keeping the soil on the dry side.
  • Allow the soil mix to become nearly dry between waterings, - in fact the stems will droop slightly before you need to water.
  • In the winter the cactus does not need water, just a light mist occasionally if inside. Never allow pots to sit in water.
  • Echinopsis appreciate strong light during the growing season. Move plants outdoors if possible but acclimate to direct sunlight slowly to prevent scorching.
  • During the growing season (March to October), feed with a cacti fertilizer mix or a standard multipurpose at ¼ strength. Suspend feeding during the dormant winter period.
