Product Description

Create a striking focal point in protected borders or patios all year-round with Cordyline 'Red Star'.

With arching deep red sword leaves the Cordyline ‘Red Star’ is a splendid plant for the patio, contrasting beautifully with the more familiar greens of other plants and bringing a tropical feel to the garden.

Plant in a pot and grow outside through the summer before moving to a protected space such as a greenhouse or conservatory for the winter. As your Cordyline matures it will become more frost hardy, therefore it can be left outside in all but the coldest weather and will withstand all but severe frost. When mature expect to see lovely spikes of white, exquisitely scented blooms in late summer.

Supplied as an established plant in a 12cm pot approx. 55cm tall, ready to plant. Grows to a height of 3m.

Care Guide

  • Water plants freely during the growing season, and sparingly in winter.
  • Feed monthly with a balanced, liquid fertiliser from spring to late summer.
  • Top-dress or pot up in spring. Although frost hardy, young Cordyline plants, and also coloured varieties are more prone to cold damage.
  • This can be prevented by tying up the foliage to reduce wind damage and prevent water collecting around growing points and causing rotting.
  • In areas prone to severe winters, wrap the trunk with layers of fleece and place a 15cm (6in) layer of mulch, such as bark, over the root area.
  • Move container grown plants to a frost-free location, such as a greenhouse, during periods of cold or wet weather - temporary shelter in a shed or garage will do.
