Product Description
Bananas have become very popular in the last few years, for their large architectural leaves as opposed to their fruit!
The Red Abyssinian Banana is a relative newcomer, and brings with it a stunning colour addition - the huge paddle shaped leaves that can reach 75cm long in a season are heavily veined burgundy red, and in full sun the leaf edges have a very red tinge.
Grow in large heavy pots for stability, in full sun and warm spots, and feed and water well in June-August when they grow quickly. Borderline hardy, so in late Autumn, allow leaves to die back and cut stem to 20cm tall, and bring somewhere frost free till following May. Keep dry, and new leaves should quickly emerge next year.
Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, approx. 30-40cm tall, ready to plant out.

Water well during the summer months and protect from winter frost by bringing indoors.
Care Guide
- Under glass, grow in loam-based potting compost (JI No.3) in full light with shade from hot sun; repot every other year, in spring.
- In warmer parts of the country for outdoors grow in a sheltered position in humus-rich well-drained soil in full sun.
- Keep well watered and protect from drying winds which can shred the leaves.
- During the growing season water regularly and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser each month.
- Frost tender, so foliage will be blackened. In frost-prone areas lift outdoor specimens before the first frosts, reducing the top-growth to the newest 2 or 3 leaves and cutting back the long roots.
- Overwinter under glass in a frost-free greenhouse until all risk of frost has passed.

Have had three orders this year and all of the plants received have bolted - tall thin and not able to stand on their own - try would not be able to sell them in a garden centre where people could actually see what they are buying.Product:
Forced in a small pot, to tall thin and leggy, so not able to grow from the middle like these banana plant should.

This is a good size plant, but I felt a 3inch pot was far too small andalthough the weather was bad, I had to repot it into a larger pot immediately as it kept falling over. Otherwise seems healthy and has had new growth so ok at the moment.
