Cylcamen hederifolium, or ivy-leaved cyclamen, is a hardy perennial that will reward year after year with delicate but vibrantly coloured pink petals.
Not to be confused with indoor pot plant varieties, these wild cyclamen are a stunning garden plant for naturalising in shaded or semi-shaded areas, such as under trees and hedges, providing pretty autumn colour and subtle, long-lasting foliage interest.
They flower profusely in autumn; once established, the blooms appear straight from the ground before any leaves emerge. As they die back over winter, the striking silver-veined, mottled deep-green leaves linger until the warmth of the following spring.
As the plants mature, they will gradually spread out to form small clumps of up to 30 flowers and naturalise to create a delicate carpet of fully hardy, maintenance-free plants. They will flower each autumn, producing varying hues of pink as the tubers spread and mature.
They are perfect for filling awkward, shady spots or populating larger areas of dappled shade or woodland, and are drought tolerant once established.
Supplied as a pack of 3 bulbs of 13-15cm for planting from September to October, they will flower in October and November in their first year, and from September to November thereafter.
