Japanese Tree Peonies really are one of the most majestic garden plants you can grow. When in full summer flower the huge white papery flowers will smother the tree.
Despite their fine foliage and paper-thin flowers, they are very robust and very hardy, and surprisingly easy to grow - although patience helps too, as they can be slow to really get going for a year or two after initial planting.
Modern varieties are grafted, and all produce their classic huge flowers, up to 20cm (8in) across in late spring and summer. Plant straight into deep, well-drained soils (avoid growing in pots for best results), they are fairly fuss free, and will produce flowers from 2-3 years' time.
Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot, approx. 30-50cm tall, ready to plant out.

- Despite the myths that surround them, peonies are easy to grow.
- They need plenty of water as long as they don't get waterlogged, so plant your peonies in soil that drains well. Clay is fine as long as it doesn't stay wet.
- Peonies flower at their best in full sun, but they will tolerate light shade.
Feed with a general fertiliser in spring, but avoid over-feeding with high nitrogen fertilisers. - To conserve moisture and suppress weeds, mulch around the crown with 5-7.5cm (2-3in) organic matter. Avoid covering the crown itself.
- The flower stems may not be strong enough to keep the often-heavy flamboyant flowers upright and staking is often required.
- It is generally best to cut the foliage to ground level as it dies back in the autumn to reduce risk of peony wilt.
- Peonies seldom need to be divided or moved, but if necessary it should be carried out only in the autumn.
