Product Description

Aquilegia, often called the Columbine or granny’s Bonnet is a quintessential favourite in cottage style gardens. They are beautiful perennials with incredibly intricate flowers, rising on long, straight stems above mounds of scalloped grey-green foliage.

The flowers of Aquilegia ‘Winky Blue and White’ are upward facing and have stunning purple-blue outer petals and rearward pointing spurs with two-tone blue and white inner petals.  Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators', the late spring and early summer flowers are a favourite with butterflies and bees.

Best grown in partial shade, Aquilegia prefer moist but well drained soil. They do well in containers too and make delightful cut flowers, lasting well in a vase. Aquilegia readily self-seed, and you’ll notice them popping up all over your garden, increasing your collection, and they’re ideal gifts for your gardening friends!

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting, and growing to a height of 60cm (2ft) and width of 50cm (20in).

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Avoid planting in full sun or wet ground.

Care Guide

  • To plant, firstly water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • If the soil is heavy or not free draining add plenty of well-rotted compost and grit and dig in well.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out some of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed.
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well before adding a mulch around the base of the plant.
  • Large clumps can be lifted and divided in early spring.
  • Aquilegia will die back in naturally autumn. When this happens, trim them to ground level. The plants will regrow the following spring. However, you can also cut back the flower stems in early summer, after they fade to make room for other plants.
  • Aquilegia can be susceptible to powdery and downy mildew. If you notice this on the foliage, simply snip off the affected leaves.
