Product Description

Primula vulgaris, our native wildflower primrose, is a much loved and popular variety of primula. The lightly scented flowers are a herald of spring, second only to snowdrops, and are instantly recognisable as they emerge above a rosette of zesty green, ruffled leaves.

An exquisite plant, they'll delight you with their gorgeous pale-lemon flowers, each with a darker central eye. Really something special, primroses produce masses of blooms which are carried on short, delicate stems. Plants are best appreciated in small groups at the edge of flowerbeds or in pots - even better in a woodland setting among ferns and other woodland plants where you can allow them to naturalise as they would in the wild.

A spring-flowering, fully winter-hardy perennial, primroses make a great addition to autumn and winter containers where the luxurious, textured foliage will add interest before bursting into flower in the spring. They’re one of the easiest garden plants to grow too, needing an absolute minimum of care and will self-seed freely.

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be assured that this plant will perform perfectly in your garden.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting out.

Plant Information

Top Tips

Plant primroses where they can get some shade - as a woodland native they thrive out of the sun. Ensure that they are kept well watered.

Care Guide

  • Primroses enjoy moist, well-drained soil. Established plants can be planted out anytime, unless the soil is waterlogged or frozen.
  • If planting in a container, fill with multipurpose compost about three quarters full. Remove the plant from its existing pot or tray and carefully place into position.
  • Add the remaining soil to the plant pot and press firmly into place then water well.
  • If planting in the ground, dig a hole the same size as the plant’s root ball. Place the plant in position, firm down the soil and water immediately.
  • To prolong flowering, remove spent flower heads and remove any yellow leaves.

Although the plants were of good quality the packaging was very poor, consequently some of the plants had left their pots and were floating loose in the box resulting in damage to foliage and lose of soil around the roots. Repotting was required immediately to rescue these battered specimens. The condition of these plants and the lack of care in packaging and almost certainly the careless actions of the delivery company and driver has made me reconsider whether it is ever worth buying plants from internet companies again.
