Product Description

A classic cottage garden perennial, Geranium phaeum 'Samobor' is one of those invaluable plants that not only looks good but is perfect for almost any situation.

With small, nodding, purple-black flowers emerging in late spring to early summer, 'Samobor' is also notable for its soft green, deeply lobed patterned leaves, which quickly spreads to form a mound of foliage that is excellent for suppressing weeds.

The upright stems are topped with sprays of very dark purple flowers, with petals that curve back to reveal the stamens and the classic 'cranesbill' shape. Geranium phaeum's other common names of 'mourning widow' and 'dusky cranesbill' are inspired by the intense dark colour of the flowers, which match almost perfectly the coloured splashes on the leaves.

An absolute star performer in sun or shade, in the garden or in containers, Samobor prefers a rich, moist soil but will grow in dry shade too, making this an excellent, multi-purpose plant - an excellent choice for a woodland garden among ferns or at the edge of a flower border.

Supplied as an established perennial plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting out. - Note plants are dormant October - March so may show no leaves in the pot.

Plant Information

Top Tips

Snip off faded flowers at the base or shear the tops of the plants back to new growth in order to stimulate reblooming and freshen the foliage.

Care Guide

  • Really low maintenance.
  • Prefers compost-enriched soil that stays moist. If planting straight out, keep well-watered until established.
  • Doesn’t normally need dividing but plants can be split in spring or autumn if needed.
  • A haircut with shears after flowering is all the pruning that is required.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.
  • When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.
  • Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the rootball.
  • The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.
