Product Description

A dazzling garden shrub with large, deep pink blooms from months on end - from early summer right into autumn. The flowers of Lavatera 'Burgundy Wine' shimmer faintly with an iridescent hue in the sun, making this a garden plant with the 'wow-factor'. The large hollyhock-like blooms are attractive to bees and butterflies so you can also do your bit to help conserve wildlife.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. Fully hardy and easy to care for, Lavatera deserves a prominent place in any garden, where it will bring a colourful display when other plants are beginning to look tired - it's fast-growing stems quickly filling borders with subtle colour and structure.

Also known as the tree Mallow, Lavatera is not just a pretty face, its upright branches are decked with semi-evergreen palmate leaves - making it an ideal feature that can extend interest through many seasons whether grown in a large pot or in your border.

Compact enough to grow in a pot if space is limited, you can restrict its size with a bit of judicial pruning, so anyone can have a go at growing this stunning beauty.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, Lavatera blooms June - September and will reach an approximate height of approx. 1.2m (4ft).

Plant Information

Top Tips

Mallow can be slow to break bud in spring so be patient with plants that might appear to have died over winter as they may still be dormant.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for Lavatera 'Burgundy Wine':

  • Grow in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Alternatively, can be grown successfully in a pot.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds.
  • Water your potted shrub well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a conditioner such as well rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If planting in a container, use the best compost that you can buy (our premium compost is ideal) and add some stones or gravel to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage and also to provide some ballast to stop the pot blowing over.

Aftercare Advice for your Tree Mallow 'Burgundy Wine':

  • Your mallow will need regular water when first planted until established. After that, they fairly maintenance free.
  • Feed plants regularly during the growing season with a general-purpose feed such as our Blooming Fast soluble fertiliser.
