  • This spectacular variety of Wisteria is perfectly suited to growing in UK gardens.
  • Unlike virtually all other varieties of Wisteria though, many of which can take up to five years to flower, Longwood Purple will reliably flower in its second year.
  • The flowers will pour like a river of lilac from this fantastic plant throughout May, filling the air with the perfume of spring flowers.
  • In its early years it will remain compact and manageable and as such makes a brilliant patio plant perfect for growing in a pot.
  • Eventually it will reach a height of 16-17ft and will spread to around 10ft if left un-pruned. However, it can be maintained at half this size and still yield masses of flowers every single spring from next year onwards!

Product Description

A cottage garden favourite, this spectacular variety of Wisteria is an American form that is perfectly suited to growing in UK gardens with its racemes of luxurious purple flowers. A reliable climber you can be sure that it will flower in your garden as it is grafted and therefore proven to bloom.

Unlike many other varieties which can take up to 7 years to flower, the showy, rounded blooms of 'Longwood Purple' will cascade like a river of lilac from its second year, filling the air with sweet perfume.

Wisterias are actually really easy to grow and will reward you with many years of pleasure in your garden. Ideal for covering a wall or pergola, wisteria can also be grown up and through an existing tree for a stunning torrent of flowers in your garden.

No longer reserved for large country houses, in its early years Longwood Purple will remain compact and manageable and as such makes a brilliant patio plant - perfect for growing in a large pot to cover pergolas and patios with cascades of bloom.

After 10 years it will reach a height of 5m (16-17ft) and will spread to around 3m (10ft) if left un-pruned. It can however be maintained at half this size and still yield masses of flowers every single spring!

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for immediate planting.

Plant Information

Top Tips

Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer. Like other members of the pea family, wisteria fixes nitrogen in the soil, so too much nitrogen causes excessive leaf growth and poor flowering.

Care Guide

  • Although capable of growing up to 5m (17ft), Longwood Purple is easily restricted by pruning and can even be trained as a small standard tree.
  • As wisteria are long lived, site is important, so pick somewhere that your plant will be happy.
  • Plants like moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in sun or light shade.
  • As blossom can be damaged by late frosts, it is advisable to plant in a sheltered spot.
  • Provide the twining stems with an appropriate and sturdy support, such as strong trellis or wires attached to walls and pergolas.
  • If growing on a wall, tie in to horizontal wire supports, then once a permanent framework has been established ongoing pruning is simple - just prune back extension growths from the main branches to 4-6 leaves in late July or early August and then back to 3-4 buds in midwinter.
