Product Description

Trachelospermum, also known as Star Jasmine, will smother walls, fences, structures and supports in beautifully fragrant, star-shaped flowers all summer-long. As both a hardy and evergreen plant, jasmines provide year-round interest in your garden with gorgeous glossy green foliage all year embellished by beautiful flowers throughout the summer.

Slow growing and easy to manage, they're ideal for climbing up pergolas, arches, trellises or tumbling over large patio pots.

Trachelospermum will bring an exotic touch to your garden and is hardy to approx. -5°C in the UK and can grow to 6m tall, making it a perfect choice for training up supports and structures.

The Chinese jasmine, Trachelospermum asiaticum, bears clusters of jasmine-scented, flowers from mid- to late-summer, contrasting perfectly with its dark green leaves. It’s perfect for covering a sheltered, sunny wall or fence, and may be trained to grow through a tree.

Chili & Vanilla is an evergreen jasmine with many very fragrant yellow-cream flowers from June to August, followed by green pods that look like vanilla pods and later red chillies. Drought resistant when established, plants do need protection from prolonged exposure to intense cold so we recommend growing it in a pot where it can be moved undercover. Ht 3m x 2m, grow in full sun and expect to see the interesting, inedible fruits from September to October.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot ready to plant out now.

Plant Information

Top Tips

If you live in an area where temperatures are likely to drop below -5°C, Trachelospermum can be grown in a container in John Innes No 3 potting compost, or in a good quality multipurpose or peat-free compost.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for Trachelospermum:

  • Grow in well-drained soil in full sun, provide shelter from cold winds which can damage the buds.
    Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure along with some ericaceous compost to the earth removed from the hole.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • In areas where temperatures fall below -10 degrees, we recommend growing in a large pot that you can either bring under glass over winter or protect with fleece.

Aftercare Advice for Trachelospermum:

  • Water 'Genie' well and regularly for the first few months until established.
  • Do not allow plants to dry out in the first season after planting. Once established, they will become much more tolerant to a lack of water, as the root system develops.
  • Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds.
  • Apply a general-purpose fertiliser and a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant after planting and thereafter annually.

Pruning Advice for Trachelospermum:

  • There is no real need to prune, simply remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in midsummer when the tree is in full leaf.
