The passion flower (passiflora) immediately conjures up images of exotic locations, and with its tropical, fragrant flowers it's certainly an attention grabber!

The incredible flowers of Passiflora caerula 'Purple haze' are an intricate collection of filaments, tendrils and petals, all bound together in a colourful symphony of floral perfection that will captivate even the most hard-to-please gardener.

As a climber, the 'Purple Haze' is the perfect plant to add height and drama to your garden, and in ideal conditions, these exquisitely beautiful vines will grow rapidly with their lobed leaves and twining tendrils which help support the plant on its journey upwards.

Despite its tropical origins (it heralds from lush rain forests), passiflora caerula is perfectly suited to a sunny sheltered spot in the garden as well as in containers where it makes for an easy houseplant in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Vigorous and easy to grow, these tropical climbers are hardy to around -10°C and always rewarding for their sheer exuberance and every gardener should have a go at growing them!

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, 'Purple Haze' will flower from July to October and blooms are often followed by egg-shaped, inedible fruits.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for Passiflora ‘Purple Haze’:

  • Passion flowers tends to bloom particularly well when their roots are restricted by a container or a solid border such as a path.
  • When planting in a container, use John Innes No 3 potting compost, or any good quality compost.
  • Pot-grown shrubs can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen.
  • Water your potted plant well, then dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice for your ‘Purple Haze’:

  • Water 'Purple Haze' well and regularly for the first few months. With a robust and rapidly growing root system, your plant will establish rapidly.
  • Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds.
  • Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant after planting and thereafter annually.

Pruning Advice for Purple Haze Passion Flower:

  • Little pruning is needed apart from removing any branches that are dead, damaged or diseased.
  • If your passion flower is overgrown or badly frost-damaged, carry out renovation in spring by cutting back the stems to 30-60cm (1-2ft) from soil level and Purple Haze will respond by sending out new shoots.
