A traditional rose bred back in the heyday of rose gardening during the 70's when every garden had a favourite rose bush, and bright colours were a must-have.
Alinka is a beautiful hybrid tea rose and certainly caught the eye of our growers with its scorching blooms and light, delicate fragrance.
Its medium to large bi-coloured flowers open from scarlet-red buds into a sunset combination of rich red and golden yellow and the blooms start early in the season in late May and continue right into the last warm and sunny days of autumn.
An upright and bushy shrub with dark green, glossy leaves, Alinka will grow to around 1-1.2m producing blooms which are perfect as cut flowers.
Supplied as a bare-root shrub, ready for planting out now.
What Is Supplied
- The amount of growth on Potted roses will vary at different times of year, depending on when they are potted.
- Potted roses will be Freshly potted from November to February, so are not fully rooted through.
- They will have new shoots beginning in March and April.
- They will be in leaf and then buds May and June.
- They will be in flower June and July.
- From August onwards they may be trimmed back, ready to plant and burst back into life the next season.
- From the end of September your rose has received its trim which will help it to have stronger roots and better form next year.
Plant Information
Top Tips
To prune, just remove any dead, dying, damaged and diseased stems and also deadhead regularly.
Traditionally, you would cut just above a leaf joint with a sloping cut away from the bud, however, this isn't necessary, and dont worry about pruning too much - roses are very resilient and will grow back.
When pruning, make sure that your secateurs are clean and sharp to prevent squashing stems and introducing disease.
Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help the plant establish quicker.
Care Guide
- Plant your rose where it can get plenty of sun for at least half of the day, and where it will be sheltered from the wind.
- Roses tolerate wide range of soils but thrive in deep, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, so add plenty of well-rotted manure into the hole if necessary.
- Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as Blood Fish & Bone (wash your hands afterwards!).
- Plant so that the graft union (the swollen area when the stems meet the roots) is around 3cm below soil level.
Holding the tree or plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil, and gently shake the plant, so the soil falls back around the roots. - Use your heel to compact the soil around the plant to ensure good contact around the roots.
Water in well. - Established roses can be watered around once a week through spring and summer - more if the weather is hot.
- For best results, feed roses in in late-March/April and again late July.
