Product Description

Physocarpus Ninebark is an eye-catching shrub that is mainly for its gorgeous foliage.

Emerging in the spring in a beautifully rich tone, it will create a stunning show which ends in autumn as the leaves turn purple before falling in an extravagant cascade of colour. The show isn't restricted to the leaves however, as Physocarpus is shrub with exceptional year-round interest. In early summer, dense clusters of creamy, sometimes pink-flushed flowers, form neat balls of bloom and these are followed in autumn by red-burgundy fruit pods which extend the colour in your garden right up to leaf-fall!

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

A compact shrub, bred to perform in your garden, Physocarpus is a garden plant that very few other gardeners will have, and its colour changing nature makes this a garden must-have and certainly a plant that you'll want to give pride of place to so that everyone can see it! Really easy to grow and practically trouble free, the unique foliage will form the perfect backdrop for your other garden plants and goes especially well with blues and purples.

Top Tips

Physocarpus ninebark plants are low maintenance, but they do benefit from regular pruning after flowering to promote fresh new branches from the base.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Physocarpus ninebark:

  • Plant in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade.
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Dig a planting hole and sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice for Physocarpus:

  • Drought tolerant once established, keep plants well-watered in their first year.
  • Prune ninebark after it flowers (no later than mid-August) to maintain its shape and to remove any damaged or dead branches.
  • Older shrubs can be pruned close to the ground for winter to renew the plant and encourage better leaf and flower growth. Ninebark will recover well after pruning.
