Unusual and rarely available to UK gardeners, Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire' (also known as Persian Ironwood) will amaze averyone who sees it, whatever the time of year.
With its purple shoots in spring, your garden will be filled with gorgeous colour, then in summer, the leaves of Persian Spire turn to dark green with a striking purple border. Then, in autumn, its foliage will turn yellow/orange/red before falling in a fiery display of colour to reveal its delicately coloured bark.
An award-winning shrub, this new form of Parrotia has narrow, upright growth and its more compact size makes it a perfect specimen for containers and small gardens, adding vertical interest and taking up little room wherever it is planted.
Hardy to -30°C you don't have to worry about protecting it over the winter and the bare branches produce dainty flowers in February and March before the leaves appear, giving added interest to your early spring garden.
Easy to grow, this really is a plant that anyone can enjoy from beginner to expert.

Care Guide
Planting Advice for your Parrotia persica:
- Best in moist soil, in partial shade or in a sunny spot.
- To plant, water your potted plant well.
- Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
- Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
- Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
- Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil with your palm, avoiding the root ball.
- Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
- If you’re planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
- Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.
Aftercare advice for 'Persian Spire':
- Plants enjoy regular watering and don't like to dry out. It's especially important to keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot.
Pruning Advice for Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire':
- Prune in late autumn or winter to remove any misplaced or damaged branches.
- After pruning, mulch with a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted compost or manure.
