Product Description

Also known as 'Summersweet' this lovely medium sized shrub is perfect for bringing late summer colour to the garden.

'Ruby Spice' produces an abundance of rosy-pink, bottlebrush flowers in late summer and autumn. Not only do the flowers look incredible bursting from the glossy deep-green foliage, but they also bear a mesmerising sweet clove fragrance that is highly attractive to butterflies, bees and other beneficial pollinators and garden visitors. Your garden will be buzzing with life throughout summer!

Easy to grow and maintain and is both happy in full sun but will also tolerate full shade so it's a great choice for those awkward shady corners. It prefers acidic soil, so we recommend incorporating plenty of peat or ericaceous compost for best results, especially when growing in a container.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as an established plant in a 19cm pot, ready to plant out, reaching a height and spread of 150cm (5ft).

Plant Information

Top Tips

Pot-grown shrubs can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen. If in doubt, err towards spring but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for Clethra 'Ruby Spice':

  • Grow in full sun to partial shade - plants will even tolerate full shade.
  • Prefers moist, well drained soil that is on the acidic side.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots and add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball, and water well.

Aftercare advice for 'Ruby Spice'

  • Keep plants well-watered until established.

Pruning Advice for Clethra

  • Prune only to remove diseased and damaged parts of the shrub.
  • Remove root suckers to prevent unwanted spread.
