Product Description

Rarely available to UK gardeners, the Japanese Burberry 'Berber' is a gorgeous and versatile shrub that grows in a loose upright form and makes a perfect low-maintenance hedge or edging or can be added to a border or used as a specimen plant in a container.

In this collection you will receive:

  • Berberis 'Chocolate Summer' - Berberis ‘Chocolate Summer’ is an incredibly useful garden plant. Thriving in a sunny location, its deep burgundy-brown leaves are carried on vibrant red stems, a striking colour combination anywhere in your garden. Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators', during April and May, dainty bright yellow flowers emerge, attracting bees and butterflies. These are followed in late summer by small orange berries.
  • Berberis 'Coral' - ‘Coral’ is a beautiful dwarf Berberis, a bright and colourful deciduous shrub with large, oval leaves and contrasting yellow-green stems. Preferring a sunny spot, ‘Coral’, has the most spectacular foliage, with incredibly bright red leaves that have a thin line of gold around their edges. Coral is also recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators'.
  • Berberis 'Summer Sunset' - With its wonderfully bright foliage, Berberis ‘Summer Sunset’ will make a vibrant addition to your garden planting. A dwarf variety, this beautiful deciduous shrub is slow growing, with dense, intense golden yellow foliage that’s tinged in deep orange when young and becomes more lime green as it ages. The bright colouring means that ‘Summer Sunset’ looks sensational planted in your mixed borders.

Berberis are completely hardy, drought tolerant and easy to grow and care for. Although they don't require much pruning, they can be trimmed after flowering in spring. It will also respond well to being clipped to shape for hedging.

Supplied as 3 x established plant in 9cm pots, ready to plant out.

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Grow in sun or partial shade for the best leaf colour, as too much shade will turn the leaves green.

Care Guide

  • Winter hardy and low maintenance, berberis prefers well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade - if planting in full sun, keep the plant well-watered.
  • To plant, firstly water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well before adding a mulch around the base of the plant.
  • Keep plants well-watered, especially if grown in a pot, and feed with our specialist shrub feed.
  • Pruning is minimal, with a light trim after flowering, and any damaged or misplaced branches can be removed in autumn.
