Product Description

Philadelphus coronaria will be clothed in a profusion of creamy-white flowers with delicate yellow stamens throughout June and July. Probably one of the most scented of garden plants, everyone will notice its beautiful citrus fragrance as they walk past – well-deserving of its common name of 'Mock Orange'.

An ideal specimen plant for a large container on your patio or decking, you can position it near your house so that the gorgeous scent can drift into your home. As the blooms finish, they shed their petals like a snowstorm, looking for all the world like white cherry blossom carpeting the ground.

From spring to early summer, large, soft-green leaves cover the upright stems, making the perfect foil for other plants of contrasting foliage and flowers. Being deciduous, the plant will lose its leaves in the autumn through winter, bursting into life again in early spring with pale green leaves that will darken as they mature.

Plant in the back of beds and borders where they have room to grow, or near paths or seating areas where the scent can be enjoyed.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot, ready to plant out.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Philadelphus:

  • Water your pot well before planting.
  • Select an appropriate spot for your plant, making sure that you give it enough space to grow to its full size.
  • Philadelphus coronaria prefer moist but well-drained soil in full or semi-shade, in a sheltered or exposed position.
  • Dig a hole wider than the width of the pot, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone.
  • Aim to plant at the same depth as the height of the pot.
  • Holding the plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil. Then firm the soil around the rootball with your heel.
  • If you are planting in a container, place some rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy.

Aftercare Advice for your Philadelphus:

  • Keep well-watered after planting. Once the plant is established, it will become more tolerant of dry conditions.
  • Mulch around the roots in spring with a deep layer of well-rotted garden compost or manure.
  • Prune in late summer, immediately after flowering, using good-quality secateurs, removing one in four of the older stems to ground level to promote rejuvenation.
