With its wonderfully bright foliage, Berberis ‘Summer Sunset’ will make a vibrant addition to your garden planting.
A dwarf variety, this beautiful deciduous shrub is slow growing, with dense, intense golden yellow foliage that’s tinged in deep orange when young and becomes more lime green as it ages. The bright colouring means that ‘Summer Sunset’ looks sensational planted in borders as a contrast to more dark leafed plants, especially those with red or purple foliage.
Berberis are happy in sun or partial shade, but the best, brightest leave colour comes from growing in full sun. As a dwarf variety, ‘Summer Sunset’ is well suited to growing in pots and as it grows to just 50cm (20in) tall, makes an excellent low-growing hedge, perfect as an edging to flower beds or along a path.
Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators', is spring, racemes of tiny yellow flowers emerge, attracting bees and butterflies, followed by berries in the autumn. ‘Summer Sunset’, like all Berberis, is incredibly robust and hardy and is almost maintenance free, only needed a light trim after flowering and again in autumn to keep it in shape.
Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting, reaching a height and spread of 50cm (20in).
