Product Description

The first Crinodendron to have white flowers, ‘Alf Robbins’ is a rare find, and you’re unlikely to see it in many gardens, with pink and red flowering varieties being more usual, yet even those aren’t common.

Long slender leaves that are deep green and glossy give this bushy evergreen shrub an exotic look, even before the flowers have opened. Masses of long stemmed, creamy white blooms cover the plant from May until August, standing out in contrast against the foliage and giving it its more common name, the Lantern Tree.

Crinodendrons are perfectly happy in UK gardens in sun or partial shade and prefer acidic soil, so if growing in a container add ericaceous compost and you plant with thrive, looking spectacular whether it’s flowering or not!

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, reaching a height and spread of 2.5m in 10 years.

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Plant in a partially shaded spot, away from cold winds.

Care Guide

Planting Advice

  • Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained acid soil. Prefers partial shade or in sun where the roots can be kept cool and shaded.
  • Prefers a sheltered position – ideal for a woodland garden.

Aftercare Advice

  • Blooms form from the autumn so provide frost protection where necessary over winter in more exposed positions.
  • In late winter, feed with slow-release fertilizer, as well as some sulphate of potash, then mulch around your shrub with ericaceous compost, pine needles or leaf mould.

Pruning Advice

  • Pruning can be done in spring or autumn after flowering, when you can lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the shape of the plant.
  • Remove any dead or damaged branches and thin out to let light in to the centre of the bush to help flowering the following year.
