Product Description

A beautiful hydrangea, ‘Butterfly’ is a delightfully light and airy shrub that produces huge, elegant cone shaped panicles of loosely clustered pure white blooms.

The flowers are highly fragranced and are loved by butterflies and other pollinators that all find them irresistible as they sway in the breeze between June and August. The flower stems make striking cut flowers and look magnificent in indoor arrangements, and they’ll fill your room with their delicious fragrance!

‘Butterfly’ isn’t fussy about soil as long as it’s free draining and will thrive in a sunny or partially shaded spot, either in the ground or as an impressive specimen in a large pot.

As with all hydrangeas, after the flowing season has ended the remaining flowers can be left on the plant over winter, where they provide a hiding place for insects and look wonderful on frosty days.

Supplied as an established plant in a 17cm pot, ready for planting, growing to a height and spread of 1.5m (5ft).

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Extend the season of interest by leaving some flowerheads on the plants over winter, where they will look gorgeous covered with frost and they will provide shelter for overwintering wildlife.

Care Guide

  • Just plant in position, water well, and add some fertiliser – they will burst into growth and flower profusely all summer!
  • These plants are at their best in moist soil as long as it is well-drained, in sun or part shade. The more sun the plant gets, the better the flower colour. A moisture-loving plant, remember to water regularly and deeply.
  • Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely.
  • Pruning is generally best carried out in early spring. A general tidy-up is usually all that is needed and consists of removing the dead bloom from each stem, cutting back to the first strong, healthy pair of buds down from the faded flower.
  • As this hydrangea flowers on the previous year's growth, in spring cut out 1 or 2 of the oldest stems at the base to encourage the production of new, replacement growth that will carry more flowers.
