Product Description

Whatever plant is used, topiary of any kind always draws attention, bringing elegance to the garden like few other things can. Buxus, or Box, is the classic plant for growing as topiary because of its glossy, evergreen foliage and small leaves which lend themselves perfectly to being clipped into precise shapes.

Box topiary provides valuable structure in the garden all year round and our classic pyramids are the perfect example. Planted in borders they provide a beautiful focal point, and they look stunning when grown in eye-catching pots and arranged either side of a door or gate, or lining a path.

Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators', box has tiny yellow spring flowers, which although hardly noticeable to us, are favourite with butterflies and bees.

Incredibly tough and fully winter hardy, box is slow growing so its shape stays looking neat with little more than a light trim just twice a year. Clipping these plants is so therapeutic, and once you have topiary in your garden, you’re certain to want more and more!

Supplied as a pair of established plants in 26cm pots, 60-70cm in height.

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Trim box on a cloudy day, as bright sunshine can burn the leaf tips, turning them brown.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Box

  • Plant box in fertile, well-drained soil and keep it watered, especially if grown in full sun.
  • Pot-grown plants can be planted any time of year as long as the ground is not wet or waterlogged.

Aftercare Advice

  • Besides keeping plants well-watered, box appreciates a light top dressing with a slow release, general purpose fertiliser such as fish blood & bone in early spring, taking care to avoid the leaves.

Pruning

  • Pruning box is simple. Box is best clipped in late spring - any earlier and you risk damage from late frosts which can damage soft new growth. Clipping again in late summer will ensure the plants stay neat over the winter.
  • Old, scruffy plants can be clipped to 15-30cm of the ground (6-12in) to rejuvenate them.
The small leaf size of Buxus means that you can achieve a whole range of topiary shapes and styles with the minimum of experience - box is remarkably resilient.
