Product Description

A highly attractive feature tree, Pomegranates are well-known, although not as widely grown in our gardens as they should be.

With deep green foliage and bright orange-red flowers in summer, your pomegranate will look great for years to come, with its shiny fruits ripening in the sun and providing a beautiful contrast to its leaves.

Pomegranates are super-healthy and packed with antioxidants which is really important if you're looking after your wellbeing - the fruits can be used in cooking sweet or savoury dishes and taste great when made into refreshing, fragrant pomegranate juice!

A fairly compact, deciduous shrub, Pomegranate 'Mollar de Elche' is completely hardy when established, and will easily tolerate our British winters, down to -15°C. It's a popular Spanish variety grown commercially for its flavour and ease of cultivation, so you're sure it’s a good choice to grow. For best results in the UK, grow in a warm and sunny aspect in a pot where it can be moved around as necessary before planting out when its trunk has thicker wood.

Heat is essential for the formation of the fruits, which develop into rosy red globes containing their trademark ruby-like jewelled 'arils' (the fleshy part of the seed).  The seeds themself are very soft which makes them very easy to eat and have been describes as virtually seedless.

Easy to grow and great in a pot on the patio, pomegranates like a rich soil with plenty of grit and gravel for good drainage. Although drought-tolerant when established, do keep your plant well-watered and it will flower throughout the summer.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot. Flowers June - August, fruit from September. Ultimate height 1.5m (2ft).

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Your Pomegranate Trees is best grown in a container where it can be grown outside during the summer and moved indoors ahead of colder weather. Although hardy to -15°C when established, plants are best protected from frost when young.
  • Pomegranate bushes love hot summers and your bush will thrive in a sunny spot in the shelter of a building or ideally up against a stone or brick wall that will radiate heat back to the plant, helping to ripen the fruit and protect it from any extreme winter weather.

Care Guide

Planting advice for your Pomegranate:

  • For pomegranate trees grown in containers, you will need around a 45L (10 gallon) container. Set the root ball into the pot and fill in around the roots with the soil to the top of the container but not covering the trunk.
  • Water the new tree in well and lightly tap the soil down to eliminate any air pockets and to settle it around the roots.

Pomegranate Aftercare advice:

  • Pomegranates are self-pollinating, so you only need one to set fruit and will bear fruit from their second year onwards if kept happy. They need full sun to reach their best so keep outside where possible and if inside place near a bright, sunny window.
  • If growing your pomegranate outside, keep an eye on the weather report and if the temperature drops below 40 degrees F. (4 C.), move the plant indoors to a sunny position.
  • Water the tree deeply about once a week, more often during peak summer months, especially container-grown plants.
  • During the first two years of the tree's growth, feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in November, February, and May, and thereafter in November and February.

Pruning Advice:

  • Prune out any crossing branches or shoots to three to five per branch after the tree's first year. Prune out any dead or damaged limbs in the late winter. Prune out suckers to create a more tree-like appearance.
