Product Description

Guaranteed to brighten up your garden with an abundance of dainty tubular flowers in shades of rosy red, Fuchsia microphylla 'David' is one of the most rewarding hardy fuchsias to grow. A free-flowering Fuchsia, with an upright, bushy habit, when it is in full flower the whole bush flushes with magenta making a truly spectacular show
in your garden.

Also known as 'Lady's Eardrops' and 'Dolly's Dress', Fuchsia microphylla is named because of its tiny (micro) leaves (phylla). These are delicately toothed with a red flush when young, giving the whole bush a unique effect when not in bloom. When grown in pots, a pair make a striking statement either side of doorways and entrances, bringing classic English Cottage Garden charm or contemporary flair depending on your garden - they mix with anything!

Hardy down to -5°C (23°F), 'David' can be grown in a sheltered garden or in a pot during the summer and then moved inside over the winter. Normally grown as a small shrub and reaching a height of around 90cm (36in) in a year, if grown with protection it can be trained similar to a climber such as pyrocantha and excels when grown against a south facing wall.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot, this is a size rarely offered for sale and your chance to get your hands on something really rather special. Grows 90cm (36in), Flowers from May to the first frosts.

Top Tips

If grown in a pot remember to bring your fuchsia inside overwinter as container growing does not give the same level of root protection as growing in the ground.

Care Guide

Planting advice for fuchsia microphylla 'David':

  • Plants can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F) but are best grown as a conservatory plant or left outside for the summer and brought inside for winter. Alternatively, grow next to a warm, south or east-facing wall outdoors in full sun to light, partial shade in most soils. Provide protection from cold, drying winds and frost.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots. Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.

Aftercare advice for fuchsia:

  • Feed once a year in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser such as Blood, Fish and Bone
    After planting, water regularly.
  • Mulch annually with organic matter, such as garden compost or well-rotted manure.

Pruning Advice for Fuchsia microphylla:

  • Regular pruning is rarely needed as plants are kept in check by colder weather in the winter. Hardy to -5°C, overgrown plants can be cut back to 20cm (8in) in the spring and they'll reach nearly a metre and bloom well into November if your garden remains frost free.
