Product Description

Leucothoe 'Rainbow' is an evergreen, multi-stemmed shrub with striking, arching reddish branches of long, glossy leaves which are variegated with shades of green, cream pink and bronze.

In autumn, these leaves take on a much deeper, more saturated colour, seeming to blush all over giving you year-round colour and form adding interest wherever it is planted.

Also known as the fetterbush or doghobble, this ornamental shrub is highlighted in spring with drooping clusters of dainty yellow, bell-like flowers that last well into midsummer.

Perfectly Hardy to -20C plants are easy to grow and make perfect specimens in a large pot or in beds and borders where their colourful leaves can shine through the garden. Theyre especially attractive in terracotta or rust-coloured pots.

Growing to 1.5m tall and wide, we supply an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for potting on or planting out.

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Leucothoe prefers dappled to partial shade but can be planted in full sun in cooler areas provided that they are watered regularly.
  • The more sun it receives, the more vibrant its autumn colour change.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Leucothoe 'Rainbow':

  • Grow in acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.5), well-drained soil, that is rich in organic matter.
  • Hardy to -20C plants will need shelter from harsh winter winds and strong sunshine as this will scorch the leaves.
  • To plant, water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil with your palm, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice for Leucothoe:

  • Water regular to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Feed yearly with an ericaceous fertilizer after it has finished flowering.
  • Provide a layer of mulch in the summer to keep the roots cool.

Pruning Advice for Leucothoe:

  • Pruning will help create a bushier, neater plant and overgrown plants can be cut back hard to 45cm (18in) to rejuvenate them.
  • Prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins.
