Also known as the Japanese Barberry, Berberis are attractive deciduous shrubs with spiney branches and small, oval leaves that are grown mainly for their foliage colour.
An extremely attractive compact variety, Berberis thunbergia ‘Golden Ruby’ has incredibly striking coral red foliage. Its leaves develop a beautiful golden edge as they mature, further enhancing the plants good looks. When autumn arrive, the leaves turn bright yellow in a stunning crescendo of colour before they fall.
Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators', during March and April, small bright yellow flowers emerge, attracting bees and butterflies. These are followed in late summer by glossy, bright scarlet berries that are a rich source of food for birds.
Berberis are completely hardy, drought tolerant and easy to grow and care for. Although they don’t require much pruning, they can be trimmed after flowering in spring. It will also respond well to being clipped to shape for hedging.
Supplied as an established plant in a 9 cm pot, ready for planting, reaching a height and spread of 60 cm (2 ft).
