Syringa vulgaris 'Carpe Diem' is a new lilac with attractive, glossy heart-shaped leaves and beautifully formed, lilac-blue flowers, with a sweet, unmistakable fragrance.
When they emerge, the buds are lilac, and open to reveal double blooms with a light blue-white pattern radiating from the centre. Fading to mauve as they mature, they produce a shimmering, ethereal effect when in full bloom.
Fully hardy and very easy to grow, Lilac 'Carpe Diem' will thrive is most garden soil and is surprisingly simple to look after too, needing little more than regular watering and a light prune if it gets out of shape.
Lilac will grow either in full sun or partial shade, so is a great choice if you have a rather dull corner that needs brightening and of course it makes the perfect feature shrub for your garden.
This delightful lilac is also superb as a hedging plant, adding a touch of colour to boundaries, and is perfect for cut flowers too - pick them when in bloom or cut them in bud and force the flowers in the warmth of your home - either way it's a super way to bring their magnificent perfume indoors.
Suppled as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting out, this lilac will reach 2-3m and blooms in May.
