An amazing spectacle of light and dark contrast between leaf and bloom, you'll be mesmerised by this flowering Japanese snowbell Styrax japonicus.
Planted in a sunny spot, Styrax 'Evening Light' bursts into bloom in early summer with a profusion of bright white, bell-shaped flowers which contrast magically against its glossy, dark purple leaves – almost like dancing fireflies at dusk. Even when grown in light shade it’s a spectacle of loveliness where the leaves take on a dark, olive-green colour.
As they emerge in a dense cluster of pure white drops, each lightly fragrant, nodding flower sits at the end of a colourful stem, opening up to expose a golden yellow crown of stamens.
Followed by a plethora of olive-green berries, this impressive shrub provides colour and interest through most of the year with subtle colour changes in the autumn - even in winter it’s a gem with smooth khaki bark and fine branches.
‘Evening Light’ has a compact, bushy and upright habit, reaching 2m high and 2m wide in ideal conditions, but can also be grown in a large pot.
Easy to grow and maintain in any well-drained, moisture-retaining soil, this lovely shrub is totally winter hardy to -20°C, and even the most novice of gardeners can get great results with little or no effort!
Perfect in a pot as a specimen shrub, 'Evening Light' will grow happily on a patio, terrace or balcony. It's also excellent as a flowering hedge or mixed into perennial borders and containers, where it will create an enchanting atmosphere in any garden!
Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot ready for immediate planting out.
