These two purple leaved shrubs make fantastic specimen feature plants in a large border - their sultry foliage providing a lovely contrast to the usual shades of green. As a bonus both flower freely in summer which adds to the dramatic display. You'll get a well established 2L plant of each of the following:
Cotinus coccygria 'Royal Purple' Commonly known as the 'Smoke Bush for it's haze of feathery purplish flowers in late summer this handsome shrub has waxy oval purple blooms. which turn to red in autumn. For the best display and neat appearance prune hard in early spring to encourage plenty of new growth.
Sambucus niger 'Black Lace'. Closely related to the common Elder bush yet a completely different plant visually and in habit. Black lace bears deeply dissected lacy deep purple leaves throughout from spring to autumn and creamy pink dome shaped umbels of bloom in summer which lead to depp red elder berries. Can be pruned hard in early spring to restrict size which also encourages plenty of new growth.
Both plants are fully hardy and like a sunny spot.
