Product Description

Now anyone can grow one of the most striking flowering plants that is available to gardeners!

Alstroemerias (or Peruvian Lilies) really make your garden come alive with colour and they make superb plants for beds and borders. Even if space is limited, they are more than happy in a pot to brighten up your terrace, patio or balcony.

A robust alstroemeria with masses of funnel shaped flowers produced over a long period, Incas will grow into a clump over time and give you a continuous supply of cut flowers all summer. Perfect to soften the edges of paths, they also mix well with other plants in the border, sending up shoots that are topped with their amazing spotted flowers from June to November.

A clump-forming perennial that grows to just 30cm (1ft) tall, Incas are best grown in full sun or light shade in a sheltered spot, with well-draining, fertile soil to keep the fleshy roots happy.

Naturally hardy to about -7°C, they will survive most UK winters in well drained spots and emerge bigger and bolder year after year. Very easy and low maintenance - just beware slugs on new spring growth and apply a winter mulch to protect the crown!

Supplied as a set of 3 plug plants, 1 of each variety:

Sundance, butter-yellow blooms. Goal, dark pink blooms and Vito, with red blooms.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Alstroemeria Inca Plugs:

  • On arrival, remove the plants carefully from the packaging.
  • Water the plants well, either from above or by standing them in water, but do NOT leave them in water for more than hour or two.
  • We recommend that you pot up into 3in pots and grow on for 6-8 weeks before planting out, using a good multipurpose compost such as our Premium Professional Compost.
  • Place in a warm, sunny position to grow on for 6-8 weeks in spring/summer, or over winter, until the roots have reached the bottom of the pot.
  • Water lightly but frequently. The compost should dry out on the surface between watering.

Planting in the garden:

  • Mix fertiliser and organic matter into the soil around where you want to plant.
  • Make a planting hole in this soil mixture, the right depth so that the top of the plant’s root ball is level with the top of the soil.
  • If the soil is dry, fill the empty hole with water and leave it to drain.
  • Place the plant in the hole, backfilling around it and firm well, water well.
  • Add a layer of mulch if you like, to help keep the roots moist, although don’t allow the mulch pile up against the plant’s stem.
  • Water regularly until established.

Planting in a container:

  • Put some crocks loosely over the pot’s hole and add good quality, fresh compost, mixing in some slow release fertiliser.
  • Place the well-watered plant onto the compost and firm well in - the compost should finish level with the top of the root ball.

Aftercare for Your Peruvian Lily Collection:

  • Inca alstroemerias are winter hardy, however mulch well in the first couple of winters to ensure that the plant is well established and can get through the winter on its own.
  • Free-draining soil is essential.
