Product Description

‘Boro’ is a robust and reliable beetroot variety and an award winning favourite that will produce a plentiful harvest of delicious, deep red, smooth skinned rounded roots. Resistant to bolt and disease, this is a first class beetroot!

This sweet and delicious variety is perfect for cooking – whether roasting or pickling, or for soups and salads. Not only tasty, it’s good for you too, being an excellent source of folate, with good levels of potassium and vitamin C. Young roots can be harvested as wonderfully tasty baby beets when they’re about 7.5cm across, or leave them to mature into standard beets. These lager roots can be stored over winter in dry sand in a cool position.

The green leaves and stems also make good, nutritious eating when harvested young at about 5 to 8cm tall. Rich in iron and vitamins, they have a similar flavour to leafy veg such as spinach, kale or Swiss chard – delicious when steamed, sautéed or added to soups or stews, or raw in a salad.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant ‘Boro’ with confidence, and look forward to a wonderful harvest.

Supplied as 12 plug plants, ready to grow on or plant out when the risk of frost has passed for harvesting from June to October.

Care Guide

How to grow Beetroot

  • For best results, dig in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting 30cm (12in) apart.
  • Water well until plants are established.

Harvesting

  • Baby beets are ready when they reach about 7cm (2½in) in diameter, or leave the to mature.
  • When harvesting, remove the leaves by twisting them off 5cm (2in) about the top of the root instead of cutting. This will help to prevent bleeding, which can diminish the flavour and colour of the beets.
  • Harvested roots can be stored in dry sand for winter use.
