Product Description

'Sweet Red Balconi' is a tasty variety of capsicum pepper that will provide you with generous yields of deliciously sweet, glossy, bright red peppers. An Italian variety of pepper, that have a thick flesh and a mild sweet flavour, perfect for growing in UK gardens, they will be ready to harvest from July until October.

Best grown in full sun, in a sheltered position and in fertile soil, this will help produce the biggest, sweetest peppers that quickly change from green to red. 'Sweet Red Balconi' does well in a greenhouse or indoors in a bright, sunny spot and also makes an impressive container plant on a patio or balcony.

Tasty and packed with vitamins, red peppers are much higher in nutrients than green peppers, particularly vitamins A, C, K and B6 and are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Perfect added raw to salads or roasted in the oven or added to skewers for barbequing where they have a wonderful, extra-sweet tangy taste if you let them burn a little. They freeze well too, so you can enjoy your home-grown peppers for months after the growing season has ended.

Supplied as 6 x plug plants, ready to grow on before planting out. Growing to a height of 1m (3ft) and spread of 50cm (1½ft).

Plant Information

Top Tips

Feed with high Potash feed once first flowers appear and water well, especially when the fruits begin to develop.

Care Guide

Planting Your Plugs

  • Unpack plugs immediately and stand them in water for an hour.
  • If you can’t do this, they can sit in their mini greenhouse for a week if upright and not too wet.
  • Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post, but they’ll quickly recover.
  • Put them somewhere warm, light and airy such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
  • When potting on, handle plugs carefully. Pot on using our 9cm pots in Shuttle Trays, using good multi-purpose compost.
  • Give your plants a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.
  • Position in full sun.
  • Feed and water regularly and pick peppers when they're firm and completely red.

Growing Peppers

  • Keep you pepper plants in a frost free place until the chance of frost has passed.
  • Transplant to a larger pot and move to the final growing position in a warm, sunny spot.
  • If planting in the ground, plant 60cm (2ft) apart in well prepared, free draining soil.
  • Add support, such as a bamboo cane to each plant, as they will become heavy as the peppers form.
  • Your peppers will be ready to harvest from July, or when the peppers red all over and firm.
  • Cut the peppers from the plant using secateurs or scissors.
