Product Description

Timperley Early is one of the best and earliest rhubarb varieties around you can expect to pick fresh, juicy sticks as soon as February each year with this forcing kit!

Forcing is the term used for growing your rhubarb without light which ‘forces’ them to grow sooner. As they are desperately searching for light they will shoot up much faster than normal and the lack of sunlight means a lack of photosynthesis and therefore paler stems. These paler stems are much less bitter than deeply coloured stems and therefore makes the rhubarb much sweeter to taste.

Simply plant your rhubarb crowns in one pot, then place the other pot upside down on top of the first pot and tie the handles together to create a dark chamber whereby your rhubarb crown will begin to grow up towards the light coming from the drainage holes. No bells and whistles, just easy, simple gardening! Not only will you get heavy crops much quicker, but they’ll also become much sweeter and juicier if forced.

Timperley Early is a winning rhubarb variety. The bright-pink, green-streaked stems have wonderful white flesh and are simply bursting with sweet, tangy, delicious flavour. They're perfect for chopping finely and making irresistible rhubarb crumbles and fools.

Rhubarb is very easy and incredibly rewarding to grow perfect for gardeners of all abilities.
Pick sparingly in the first year to allow your plants to establish, and you’ll be rewarded with literally pound and pounds of delicious rhubarb to harvest each year for many, many years to come!

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Remove flower stalks as soon as they appear.
  • Divide rhubarb roots every 3 to 4 years when plants are dormant in early spring or autumn.
  • Care Guide

    • Simply plant your rhubarb crowns in one pot, then place the other pot upside down on top of the first pot and tie the handles together to create a dark chamber whereby your rhubarb crown will begin to grow up towards the light coming from the drainage holes.
    • If planting outside, before planting, dig over the ground and remove all perennial weeds.
Plant in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun.
    • Plant crowns in early spring as soon as the ground is workable, when the roots are still dormant and before growth begins or plants are just beginning to leaf out. Potted plants can be planted out at any time.
    • Dig large holes around twice the size of the root spread. Space rhubarb plants about 4 feet apart and plant the roots 1 to 2 inches below the surface of the soil.
    • Add compost or well-rotted manure into the soil. Don't add any additional fertiliser.
    • Mulch generously with a heavy layer of straw to retain moisture and discourage weeds.
    • Water your plant well.
