Product Description

Perfect for small spaces or patio pots, this apple will perform just as well as any other, but in an incredibly compact form!

‘Bolero’ is a Ballerina apple tree, grown to be naturally columnar in shape and almost without branches. As this is achieved by breeding instead of pruning, the tree will maintain its upright shape without the need for skilled pruning or training. ‘Bolero’ apples are sweet, crisp and juicy, medium sized, and ready to pick from September. Ideal for eating fresh or for cooking, this is a wonderful way to grow your own apples!

Reaching just 2m in height after 5 years, Ballerina 'Bolero' is so easy to harvest as the apples naturally occur on small spurs close to the main stem instead of on branches. As well as being a productive fruit tree, it makes a spectacular ornamental tree when grown in a large pot, superb as a patio plant and wonderful displayed either side of a doorway or garden gate where you can really appreciate their lovely pink flushed, white spring blossom followed by a good crop of juicy apples.

Supplied as a bare root tree, ready to plant, growing to 2m in 5 years.

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Keep well-watered, and if growing in a pot, use a good quality, soil-based compost.

Care Guide

  • On receipt, soak the roots in water for at least two hours (overnight is better). If you can't plant straight away, they should be fine for up to a week if left in a cool, dark, frost-free place - keep the bag around the roots with some water inside.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as Blood Fish & Bone (wash your hands afterwards!).
  • Aim to plant at the same depth as the soil mark on the trunk.
  • Holding the tree or plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil, and gently shake the plant, so the soil falls back around the roots.
  • Use your heel to compact the soil around the plant to ensure good contact around the roots.
If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • No special pruning is required, but If side branches form, remove them in winter.

Originally ordered a patio columnar pear tree, a red and black currant bush and a 3 set of evergreen clematis 9cm This was not on pre-order and all showing as available at the time of order. Allowing 2 weeks as per the website for busy times I chased after 2 weeks to be told they were waiting for the pear tree. Another call as I had received no further information a couple of weeks later and was then told the pear was due in to them in mid May some 6 weeks after order, at this point I was told they were pre-order originally definitely not the case as I would just have gone to my local garden centre). A few days after the due date in May I receive an email to tell me my order is being dispatched, but the pear tree had been changed to an apple tree. A further call could not explain how the apple had been substituted and by then the pear was no longer available. In fairness the apple tree cost was refunded. When the order arrived the 3 clematis were clearly the 'barrel scrapings' possibly due to the long wait for the non appearing pear tree, one was not even a 9cm pot and 2 were 1" stumps not the promised garden ready plants. A further phone call and email picture of said clematis and I was offered a refund or replacement. I chose a replacement as wanted this set. They arrived promptly but unfortunately 2 of the three were again very small specimens, one in a smaller than 9cm pot as per the description. Decided to give up at this point and hope I can coax the stumps to grow. The last two customer service representatives were helpful but the initial calls not so much. A shame as I have had positive experiences in the past and would now think twice about using.
Product:
This was not what I ordered (a bare root columnar pear tree) The apple that appeared was a bare root twig, with no sign of any life at all. That said I planted all the same and as yet no sign of growth at all. Not such an issue as the cost of the pear was refunded so in effect no real loss. It may be that after the long wait for the bare root pear it was too late really for planting bare root trees
