Product Description

Juglans regia, the English or common walnut is a deciduous, broadleaf tree with shiny, feather-like leaves and fleshy, green fruits which contain the delicious nuts.

In spring, the trees produce tiny immature fruits which are wind pollinated by fat male catkins and, although trees are self-fertile, you can greatly improve yield by introducing another type of walnut.

The walnuts themselves develop inside a fibrous, leathery casing which splits when the nuts ripen in early autumn. This is when the nuts are at their finest, with a softer texture and distinctive, creamy taste.

If you want to store them for Christmas, you are best off drying or freezing them after removing all traces of the outer husk.

These fast-growing trees can reach 30m (100ft) high and 15m (50ft) in ideal conditions, and although tend to be smaller in the UK, they're still a plant that likes lots of room to grow.

Supplied as an established plant in a 22cm pot, approx. 1.5m tall, ready for planting out.

Did you know...

That walnuts originated in ancient Persia, where they were reserved for royalty.
The best wood is at the base of the tree, so walnuts are often dug up for timber, rather than felled.
Walnuts produce a growth inhibitor - juglone - that has a detrimental effect on some species of plants growing nearby and it is believed that this stops other plants growing around them and competing for nutrients - a very clever tree!

Plant Information

Top Tips

  • Remove nuts from the green husks as soon as possible. Any unopened husks can be slit all round with a small sharp knife to gently prize them apart.
  • Lay the nuts to dry on several layers of newspaper in a warm sunny room for about three days, turning them several times.
  • Gloves should be worn when removing the casings as walnuts stain the skin.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Juglans regia Walnut:

  • Select an appropriate spot with enough space to allow your walnut to grow.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, then add some good quality fertiliser, compost or well-rotted manure. We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Plant at the same depth as the tree was in its pot.
  • For all trees, use our Tree Planting Kits including stakes, rubber ties and Mycorrhizal fungi, which is proven to aid tree growth and development.
  • Push 40cm of each stake into the soil next to each tree. Make a figure of eight around both the trunk and stake with a tie and fasten it off. Spread Mycorrhizal granules in contact with the roots when planting.
  • Holding the tree upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil, so the soil falls back around the roots.
  • Compact the soil around the plant with your heel to ensure good contact around the roots.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • Water the plants at least weekly especially in dry weather for the first 8 weeks.

Aftercare advice for your English walnut:

  • Best in full sun to grow well, in well-drained, fertile and alkaline soils.
  • Established trees are largely trouble free.
  • Trees planted in autumn or winter establish best and trees should be spaced 12-18m (40-60ft) apart.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser such as fish blood and bone in late February.
  • A mulch of well-rotted compost around the base of the tree will help to retain moisture.

Pruning Advice for the common walnut:

  • There is no real need to prune trees and shrubs for the first couple of years. Prune established trees in summer using good quality secateurs, removing weak shoots and overlapping branches, to create an evenly spaced bowl shape. Cut branches back by roughly a third.
  • Do not prune in late winter/early spring as trees can 'bleed' sap.
