Crab Apple 'Butterball' is a small, spreading crab apple tree which produces an abundance of blossom in spring, followed by yellow-gold fruit with a subtle red flush in the autumn.
In spring, the grey-green leaves of this crab apple tree break their winter dormancy and are complimented by pink flower buds which open to white flowers flushed with pink, creating a gorgeous spectacle. Following this, 2 – 3cm wide, butter-yellow fruits are produced in abundance adding seasonal interest into the winter.
Low maintenance and undemanding, while some varieties of crab apple will need a pollinating partner, ‘Butterball’ will produce a crop even if planted on its own.
A great tree to encourage wildlife into your garden as pollinators will love the abundant spring blossom, while birds will be attracted by the plentiful fruits in autumn.
Growing to around 4m after 10 years, ‘Butterball’ is a good crab apple for smaller gardens, and its branches take on an attractive, slightly drooping habit, weeping further with the weight of its autumn bounty. A light clip is all that is needed to keep it looking smart should you feel the need.
Supplied as a bare-root tree, it has a compact habit, growing to approx. 4m (13ft) in 10 years. Fully winter hardy too.
