The discovery of
the Wollemi Pine
is the equivalent
of finding a small
dinosaur still alive
on earth
Professor Chambers, Director of Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney.
Fascinating Fact File
This miraculous time traveller exhibits growing
habits like no other plant in existence.
It has an extraordinary bubbly bark that
looks just like bubbling chocolate.
Frond like foliage shaped similar to a
Stegosaur’s tail that change from apple
green in the Spring to blue green in
the Winter.
Strange ‘polar caps’ to the ends of its
branches in winter to protect it from
frost and biting winds.
The oldest tree still living in the wild
‘King Billy’ dates back to William the
Conqueror and 1066!
A member of the Araucariaceae family
and the familiar Monkey Puzzle Tree, its
scientific title is Wollemia nobilis named after
the park where it
originates from and
the ranger David
Noble who first
discovered it.
Tolerates heat,
cold, full sun,
shade as well as
different types
of soil.

his truly
incredible
prehistoric
tree has been
capturing the
attention of
botanists and
plant lovers the
world over since it
was first discovered in 1994. Growing in
abundance during the dinosaur period, this Jurassic
wonder was thought to be extinct with only fossil
records remaining, until a lone park ranger in the
Wollemi National Park in Australia accidently came
across a small grove of just 24 of these ancient trees
hidden inside a narrow canyon deep inside the park.
The rest is history as they say. 200 million years of
history in fact and that’s what makes this extremely
important find so fascinating.
Because so few of these botanical relics still exist in
the wild, the Wollemi Pine is considered to be the
most endangered plant species in the world and a
major conservation programme is now under way to
protect its future. It has taken the last 12 years to
carefully propagate cuttings taken from the original
trees into new healthy, fully established plants that, for
the first time ever, are now available for sale in the UK.
By growing one in your own garden not only will YOU
become the offspring’s official custodian, but a
percentage of the purchase price will be donated back
to the Wollemi National Park authorities to help
preserve its original parents and other endangered
species in the park.
