They are grown for their feathery, spike-like panicles of clustered shaped spiklets borne in summer and autumn. They look great when cut and used in dried flower arranging.
Pennisetum villosum has flat linear mid-green leaves to 15cm long with long hairs just below the flower heads that measure up to 11cm long. These soft feathery plumes are pale green with white bristles turning purple as they mature. Reach an overall height and spread of 60cm.
Pennisetum alopecuroides has dark green leaves 30-60cm in length. In summer and autumn it bears yellow-green to dark purple spikelets in long panicles to 20cm in length. Reach an overall height and spread of 1 m.
